According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a selfie is described as, "A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone and shared via social media" says Wikipedia. http://snip.ly/9p5i6
Selfies put simply, are a self-portrait. One of the first self-portraits was created in October of 1839 by Robert Cornelius in Philadeliphia. http://snip.ly/vf8u8 Interestingly it is guessed he had to stand there for 10 - 15 minutes in the same position to ensure the photo would absorb the correct amount of light.
Today, there are many variations on the selfie. With the invention of the selfie stick, you can get many people into the smartphone camera's viewfinder and even a much larger view of the landscape behind the portrait taker by vacationers to those who love being outdoors.
All in all, Selfies are here to stay. They aren't just because of egos or that some can't spell 'Narcissitie' as the joke goes. Selfies recreate us in a 2-dimensional format which allows us to share ourselves with others. Who we are, what we like, what we do. It's simply another new invention such as the telephone but has had, and will continue to have, an equally revolutionary impact on the inhabitants of this planet. And by inhabitants, we really do mean that. Check out this monkey who actually took his own picture!
